If I lived in BsAs, there is no way I'd have a car. The public transportation options are just too vast. But obviously, porteños do have cars, and there's a bazillion on the roads at any given time. What you don't see, however, are many late-model cars. Old clunkers are the norm, and it's kind of a kick to see all the little old cars zipping down the avenues like every day was a road rally. The explanation I got for the lack of new cars is that people save up their money and pay cash for their vehicles. With an economy constantly in flux and interest rates higher than 20 percent if you could even get financing, buying new cars just doesn't make a whole lot of financial sense for most people.
