And, They're Off...

Speaking of animals, horses deserve a mention for certain. I never did make it to an estancia (ranch) to see the gauchos in action and the horses on the range. But horses are prevalent in the cities as well, simply due to the popularity of sports like horse racing, polo and pato (horseball), Argentina's national sport (surprise! it's not fútbol). I did visit the Hipodromo Real de San Carlos in Colonia del Sacramento in Uruguay - a popular track where the horses race every weekend. It was midweek when I was there, so the track and stables were supremely quiet. The caretakers didn't mind in the least if I wandered around and took photos.
